People, Culture Tradition:
The population of Lakshadweep is estimated at slightly over 64000 people, and almost all the people who are indigenous are believers of Islam. The people of Lakshadweep consist of four main communities – Amindivis, Koyas, Malmis and Melacheris. Amindivis are believed to be the first people that inhabited Lakshadweep. The people from the northern group of Islands such as Amindivi share cultural similarities with the nearest mainland ie. Kerala and speak Malayalam, though with an Arabic admixture and with Arabic script and not the Malayalam script, Where-as the people in the southernmost Island Minicoy share cultural similarity with Maldives and their language which is known as Mahl is very similar to Maldivian language Divehi Muslims. The inhabitants are known for their warm hospitality and vibrant cultural traditions and friendliness. Fishing, coconut cultivation and coir processing are significant aspects of their livelihoods, contributing to the unique island lifestyle.

Lakshadweep has some wonderful traditions of dance and music and Kolkali , Parichakali are few of them. Parichakali is a popular form of dance performed in most of the Islands, performed by men using wooden swords and shields. This dance form is usually enacting the Islamic tales of mighty battles fought in the days of yore.

Climate:
Lakshadweep experiences a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. The monsoon season from June to September brings heavy rainfall, making it less suitable for tourists. The post-monsoon period, from October to March, is characterised by pleasant weather, making it the best time to visit. The temperatures during this time range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius, providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities and water sports. The sea around the islands are warm and inviting throughout the year.
What is the best Time to Visit ???
The optimal time to explore Lakshadweep is during the dry season, from November to March. The weather is mild, and the sea is calm, offering excellent conditions for water activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and water sports. The clear skies during this period also provide stunning views of the coral reefs and the diverse marine life.
When not to Visit ???

Entry Permits:
Lakshadweep does not have separate entry permits; instead, travellers are required to purchase a comprehensive package from authorised travel companies. These packages include all necessary permits, accommodation, meals, and boat transfers, streamlining the entry process and providing a hassle-free experience for visitors.
Indian Visa– If you are not an Indian National, you need to have a tourist visa for India as Lakshadweep is not only a part of India, but also, It can be accessed from mainland India only. How do I reach Lakshadweep ?
Lakshadweep Island can be reached by ships and flights operated from Kochi. For all tourist purposes Kochi is the gateway to Lakshadweep. Agatti and Bangaram islands can be reached by flight from Kochi. (Last updated 15th January 2024) Alliance Air operates five AT7 aircraft between Cochi, and Agatti every day. Onward flights from Cochin are available to most of the airports in India and abroad. Airstrip is there only on Agatti island. From Agatti boats are available to Kavaratti and Kadmat during fair season October to May. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti to Bangaram Island Resort during monsoon and to Kavaratti throughout the year. The flight from Cochin to Agatti takes approximately one hour and thirty minutes.

 Lakshadweep Islands are a prohibited area, travelling to Lakshadweep Islands requires Entry Permit. Make sure your entry permits and tour is confirmed by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism) before leaving your station.
 Carry your special brand cigarettes, cosmetics, toiletries; sunscreen lotions, personal medicines, sunglasses, hats etc. for use as limited varieties will be available on the islands.
 Bangaram & Thinkkara Islands are uninhabited islands, there are no shops available at these islands, so carry items accordingly.
 Islands have the availability of Airtel network at Agatti, Bangaram, Thinkara, Kavaratti Islands & BSNL network at all Islands, please carry your sim accordingly.
 Islands have limited internet connectivity thus there are no card payment options, it is advised to carry cash in Indian Rupees to settle payments.
 Lakshadweep enjoys a tropical climate with the temperature ranging near 28 degree Celsius but rainfall is unpredictable. The best time to visit the place is between October and April.
 Loose-fitting clothing which covers arms and legs to avoid mosquito bites is recommended.
 Liquor is prohibited in all Islands except Bangaram.
 Inter-Island movement is generally done through High Speed vessels or boats, however their availability depends on weather conditions.

Access to All Islands: Indian nationals have the privilege of visiting all the islands in Lakshadweep.

Reporting to Agatti Police Station: Indian tourists, however, are required to first report to the Agatti police station upon arrival in Lakshadweep.

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC): Additionally, Indian tourists must present a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) obtained from their local police department. This certificate ensures the security and safety of the islands and its residents.
