Afternoon proceed for a guided exploration of the fascinating port city of Cochin and marvel in its culture and architecture, a result of centuries of various European influences combined with rich indigenous history. The guided tour begins from the Jewish Synagogue (closed on Fridays and Saturdays), which was built in 1568 and is still an active house of worship for the few remaining Jews in the area. Next to the synagogue is Cochin’s ancient and colorful Jew Street with its antique stores, souvenir peddlers and spice market. There is evidence of a Jewish presence in Kochi from 70 A.D. After the synagogue you visit the St. Francis Church, which was established by the Portuguese Franciscan friars in 1503. This is one of the first European churches built in India, and the famed Vasco Da Gama was buried in its courtyard for a few years before his remains were returned to Portugal. Then you visit the most photogenic of Cochin’s attractions, the Chinese fishing nets. Evening drive to nearby local theatre and experience Kerala Kaleidoscope show, a mix of Kerala dance performances and Martial art performance. Drive back to hotel after the show. |

Maria Paiva Couceiro, a Daughter of the Heart of Mary from Portugal decided to set up a house for the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in Ernakulam, and on February 11th 1961. Founder held the fond dream and vision of providing the ways and means to empower poor women in need and their families, and thereby the entire society by making arrangements for sponsorship and aid. The sisters at Vimalalayam decided to train the local women in the art of basket weaving to make them economically independent. As the news spread, thousands of women from nearby islands of Vypeen, Moolampally arrived at Vimalalayam eager to learn this craft and they soon benefited economically, spiritually, psychologically and socially by this. Later on the Sisters started to help the women in the upper strata and a Welfare Center, a College of Home Science, and a Hostel for deserving students were also set up associated with Vimalalayam. After the visit you are free for shopping at one of the famous fabric store in Cochin. You will be driven back to your hotel after you’re the shopping. Here you will learn about the state of Kerala’s holistic rural development program, Kudumbasree. Started in 1998, their mission is to eradicate poverty in rural areas through teaching women skills like organic farming, weaving, and handicrafts. Kudumbasree is built on the belief that “Women have a vital role to play in environmental management and development and their full participation is essential in achieving sustainable development.” This empowerment group is comprised of economically-disadvantaged rural residents that save and place money in a communal fund. These funds are managed communally and distributed out to group members as micro-loans, allowing members to start their own ventures, make an income, and lift themselves out of poverty. Activities throughout the day will include: witnessing a traditional folk dance, enjoying a Keralan meal in a banana leaf, learning about handloom weaving, taking a walk through the village, and interacting with locals.
